Holiday Skin Care Tips

The holidays are a great opportunity to catch up with friends and family, treat yourself to festive foods, and possibly travel. With all of these fun things, your skin may not take it the way you want it to. Here are a few tips to keep your skin healthy, without having to compromise on holiday fun.

1. Get a Good Nights Rest

I know…if you have read some of my other blogs, this tends to be a common theme of mine. But has anybody really ever told you that sleep deprivation is good for your skin, health, or anything else?

Please enjoy the later night holiday parties guilt-free, but try not to make it a nightly habit during this season. A restful night’s sleep allows your body and skin to repair itself from the day’s stress. Plus, sleep deprivation contributes to dark circles under your eyes. And I am sure you do not want your dark circles to be the topic of conversation during your family dinner.

2. Eat Healthier Treats

I, myself, have a huge sweet tooth. So staying away from hot chocolate and cookies during this season is definitely a challenge. I always recommend doing everything in balance. So if you want to treat yourself, you should… just don’t treat yourself all day long for the entire season. Excess sugar causes your skin to be more vulnerable to environmental stressors such as UV rays, pollution, and smoke. Also, your skin does not fight off free radicals when you take in too much sugar.

I have been opting for more natural sugars this holiday. My go-to has been different types of berries. Cranberries still make me feel as if I am enjoying fun holiday treats, and they have a lot of antioxidants to keep my skin and body feeling healthy!

3. Wash Your Face Before Bed

Holiday parties are a good excuse to put on our “fancy clothes” and look your best. If you wear makeup, please wash it off. Not washing off your makeup clogs your pores and causes breakouts. If you use styling gel in your hair, I recommend you wash that out before bed. There is no good time to have a pimple, so do what you can to avoid unnecessary breakouts during the holiday season by washing off your hair products and makeup.

4. Manage the Stress

Stress is not healthy for any part of your body, including your skin. So try to stay calm this season. Stress can cause breakouts. I recommend giving yourself the gift of an acne-free holiday by not stressing too much. Stress can also disrupt your skin barrier, meaning that harmful things can get into the skin easier. These harmful things can cause your skin to become ruddy, dry, irritated, and more wrinkly.

5. Don’t Neglect Your Skincare Routine

The holidays tend to busy with shopping, parties, and travel. So don’t neglect your skincare routine. Don’t stop what tends to work; otherwise, it will stop working. I know it is a busy time, but please make time for your skin like you do for the rest of the year. You will appreciate your healthy skin as you look back at holiday photos.
