What are the Benefits of Microneedling?

The secret to clear, radiant skin can be found by seeking the care of skilled, board-certified dermatologist and her staff. At NorCal Dermatology Group, we are proud to offer many skin- and beauty-enhancing treatments so you can glow from within. Microneedling works by mechanical force applied to the skin’s upper dermis layer to kickstart the body’s natural healing process of creating more collagen and elastin.

Microneedling is a revolutionary cosmetic treatment. It can effectively:

  • Reduce the visibility of acne scars
  • Minimize fine lines and winkles
  • Diminish skin hyperpigmentation
  • Lessen the appearance of stretch marks
  • Reduce cellulite
  • Shrink enlarged pores
  • Smooth out skin tone
  • Rebuild collagen lost through aging
  • Improve melasma

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is an innovative nonsurgical procedure meant to enhance the skin’s appearance by stimulating the body’s natural collagen-building response. It works because the microscopic wounds delivered by the micro-fine needles applied to the skin via a pen-shaped handpiece initiate the body’s healing process to dissolve the scarred, lined, or otherwise damaged skin and replacing it with new cells. It is performed by a professional and will not cause scar tissue formation.

The Microneedling Procedure

As you undergo microneedling, a small, pen-shaped device delivers tiny, controlled wounds to the top layer of the skin. The power handpiece has sterile, one-time use micro-fine needles no bigger than 2.5 millimeter each that create microscopic punctures in the upper dermis layer of the skin to initiate the body’s natural healing process by creating more collagen and elastin. The needles go in and out of the skin in a vertical motion as the pen is gently glided across the skin’s surface.

What Does Microneedling Feel Like?

If you are afraid of needles, don’t worry: the tiny pin pricks from the micro-fine needles only enter the surface level of the skin, and the handpiece glides across the skin smoothly and feels somewhat like sandpaper brushing against your skin. You will receive numbing cream before your procedure to ensure your comfort.

There is minimal downtime following microneedling treatment, especially compared to other cosmetic treatments that deliver similar results, such as laser resurfacing or chemical peels. Your skin may feel slightly sunburned, but you’ll be able to return to your everyday activities within about a day or two, and in less than a week, you won’t see any evidence you underwent microneedling.

How Often Should You Do Microneedling?

Most patients notice improvement in 3 to 6 microneedling sessions, depending on their aesthetic goals.Once you’ve achieved your desired outcome, we recommend 1 to 2 microneedling sessions per year for maintenance. A 2008 study found that skin treated with 4 microneedling sessions spaced 1 month apart had a 400% increase in collagen and elastin in the 6 months following treatment.

The microneedling handpiece can treat multiple areas of the body, including the entire face, neck, décolleté, hands, arms, legs, and tummy.
