A Derm Guide to Avoid Razor Bumps and Irritation While Shaving

The shaving industry is changing with start-ups such as Harry’s, Dollar Shave Club, etc. These subscription models are making shaving more convenient and affordable. But there are a few tips to shaving that have stayed true. While many of these suggestions may seem obvious, it’s important to not overlook them when shaving routinely. Here are a few ways to prevent razor bumps, nicks and irritation while shaving:

1. Don’t Dry Shave
It is important to wet the hair before you shave. Wettening the hair softens it and prevents bumps from forming. I typically recommend that you shave right after the shower because the skin will remain moist. Also, the shower has just removed the dead skin cells that can get caught in the razor blade.

2. Use Shaving Cream or Gel
Shaving without a cream or gel can be very irritating and cause bumps. If you tend to have sensitive skin, look for a cream or gel that it specifically made for sensitive skin. I recommend avoiding one that has any dyes or fragrance, as these can irritate the skin. Aloe, oatmeal, and Vitamin E are good ingredients to look for because they protect, repair and moisturize the skin while shaving.

3. Don’t Shave in the Opposite Direction
Shave in the same direction that the hair grows in. Shaving hairs in the opposite direction is a good way to get bumps and razor burns. I’ve heard clients tell me that they shave up to promote hair growth for a healthy looking mustache or beard. Unfortunately this isn’t true and IS A MYTH!

4. Rinse your Razor after Each Swipe
You don’t want to keep swiping your razor without cleaning it. Not rinsing your razor is an easy way to get irritation or an infection. It is also important to change your blade regularly. If you use disposable razors, make sure to throw them away regularly. Although it can seem wasteful, I recommend changing your blade or throwing away the disposable razor after 5 to 7 days to get optimal results.

5. Dry Your Razor Between Shaves
You should be storing your razor in a place that is dry. If your razor stays wet between shaves, bacteria can grow on it. I do not recommend leaving your razors in the shower or a wet sink.
