Cannabis is definitely having its moment. It has started to make its way into cocktails, coffee, and even water. And now it has crept into skincare.
Cannabinoids and cannabidiol, also known as CBD, are derived from the cannabis plant. Many skincare lines using cannabinoids and CBD advocate that they will help with inflammatory-related conditions such as psoriasis, rosacea, eczema, acne, and skin allergies.
I am not fully convinced though…
At this point, there is not enough evidence to show that it actually works. To date, most of the studies involving cannabis have been conducted through animal testing with very little evidence or outcomes on humans. Therefore, my professional opinion would be to wait for more research studies to see if the ingredients are actually helpful to the skin. The studies will probably come out in a few years, and I am excited to see if cannabis-derived products are helpful for inflammatory skin conditions and prevent aging skin.
Another point to note is that there is no regulation on cannabinoids and CBD in skincare yet, so you never know what you are really putting on your skin. And at the end of the day, it is THE SKIN ON YOUR BODY…so wouldn’t you want to know exactly what you are putting on your skin?
Proponents of using cannabis on the skin will argue that it maintains natural ingredients which can help heal your skin. But let’s be honest, not everything natural is good for our skin. Poison oak is natural, but I would not go about putting that all over my skin.
Don’t get me wrong, I am united in wanting to normalize and de-stigmatize cannabis. I just prefer to use products on my skin that have been thoroughly researched and shown to be safe and helpful. Until the studies come out, cannabis skincare is just overhyped and trendy in my opinion.
