Just like the seasons, our skin changes and goes through different cycles. It is important to switch up your skin care routine for the new climate (just like you would not wear a warm scarf on the hottest summer days).
Why is Switching Your Skincare Routine So Important?
The skin is very sensitive to weather changes and fluctuating temperatures. During the hotter months, the skin is exposed to more sun, which can lead to sunspots, redness, and uneven skin tones. The sun is also a good reason for rosacea flare-ups and worsening discoloration. For some of us, the skin can become extra oily and have more breakouts because of the increased sweating in the hotter months. As the cooler weather comes around in fall and winter, a lot of these issues will improve. But if you are not switching to the right products in the fall and winter, you may notice your skin becoming dry and dull. Now is the perfect time to repair summer sun damage and prevent winter dryness!
What are some key ingredients for a fall and winter skincare routine?
Because the weather is calmer, this is the best time of the year to repair any summer sun damage. Look for brightening products that include antioxidants such as Vitamin C. For hydrating the skin, I recommend getting a moisturizer with Vitamin E and essential lipids like ceramides. If you are looking into chemical peels, glycolic and lactic acid peels are great for repairing summer skin damage.
I also recommend speaking to a dermatologist about starting a prescription retinoid every night.
Retinoids are prescription creams that exfoliate the skin and unclog pores. They also help reverse some of the dark spots from the summer.
What are my Top Recommendations for a Fall and Winter Skin Care Routine?
1. A Gentle Cleanser
A great way to prevent dry skin in the fall and winter months is to use a gentle cleanser. You want to avoid a harsh cleanser that will strip away any natural oils.
2. An Antioxidant Serum
An antioxidant serum enhances your skin’s protection against environmental damage. It neutralizes free radical damage that can cause sun discoloration and accelerate wrinkles. I recommend a brightening antioxidant serum with Vitamin C every morning before your moisturizer and sunscreen.
3. Moisturizer
Because our skin has a tendency to become dry in the fall and winter, a rich moisturizer with ceramides and antioxidants will help with long-lasting hydration. I recommend using a moisturizer in the morning and night.
4. Hydrating Masks
Face masks are a great way to give yourself a spa-like treatment at home. Clay masks are great for the summer because they absorb oil, but for the fall and winter, I recommend trying a hydrating mask instead. Try putting your hydrating masks in the fridge for an extra cooling effect! You can use them once or twice a week.
5. An Eye Cream
Vitamin E is great for helping with dark circles under the eyes. A good eye cream will also decrease puffiness and help with wrinkles under the eyes. I recommend using an eye cream in the morning and at night.
6. Sunscreen
I recommend sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher all year long. Even on those cloudy days, the sun’s harmful UV rays can hit your skin.
